Eating and Spirituality

When we eat better, people notice

It was Sunday afternoon.  We pulled up in front of my daughter and son-in-law’s house to see them and our first grandchild.  My! My!  He is a real cutie.  We walked into the livingroom.  They had visitors from their Church.  It was a lovely husband and wife. I don’t know when I have experienced a better first impression as I sensed God’s work in them.  I noticed God in them and they noticed God in me. As we shook hands the lady paid me a compliment.

I ate better and she noticed

With a faint muscle-flexing gesture she said, “You are in very good shape”. I responded with these words, “I am a miracle.” I don’t remember who concurred.  It was either my wife or my daughter who said, “He is.” And I praise God that I did not fit the stereotypical middle-aged father and grandfather with a stomach protruding over his belt, slightly bowed with a slow gate to match. Also the spiritual connection is undeniable.

Eating’s Spiritual Connection is one of God’s most effective keys to our prayers for healing. We often pray for healing when God has given us the answer in various foods. Through God’s food provision and His grace, I rose out of the ashes. Fifty pounds and 5 years later, with no dieting involved, it may not actually, be a miracle but it certainly feels like one.  And why did it take so long? It took that long because I made it about health and not about weight-loss. Look at the contrast.

Eating your way to wholeness

People often ask me what I did to lose weight and a few will try to press me for a diet. They want me to give them a set of foods that I eat and I refuse because, I do not have a diet to give anyone.  I simply became an ingredient-watcher.  I did not cut the food, but instead, I cut a lot of the wrong ingredients out of my food.  Yes. It tasted nasty at first, but after about 3 months, this new way of eating started to taste good. Five years later, it looks like a miracle and I owe it all to my Lord and my Savior Jesus Christ.

Laying hold on spiritual food for spiritual wholeness

It is just as important for us to eat the right spiritual food.  The Bible says:

“…whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.  Those things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, do: and the God of peace shall be with you.”(Philippians 4:8&9).

The God of peace will be with us.  Another way of saying it is, if we think on the things that God tells us to think on, we will become peaceful, i.e., full of peace and, for many of us, that is both a task and a miracle.

I know a few people who are so transformed, spiritually that it is a miracle.  They are living examples of the fact that, eating the right spiritual food is the key to our spiritual healing.  In John 6:51, Jesus said:

“I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.”
