How Deep Is Your Love?

While chewing on John 3:16 it came to me that John 3:16 does not demonstrate the extent of the totality of God’s love. It demonstrates an extent of His love but cannot possibly demonstrate the total extent of His love, as extensive as the demonstration was.

I bought my wife ring that I could not afford. She only wears it on very, very special occasions because it is a very precious stone. When I presented it to her she responded, “Now I know how much you love me.” I told her, “You still don’t know”.  The reason I said that was because that purchase did not demonstrate how far I am willing to go for her when I don’t know how far I am willing to go myself.  It was sufficient to convince her that I loved her but it did not represent the totality of my love.

The giving of God’s Son demonstrates a partial extent of His love but not the totality of it. The Bee Gees asked the question, “How Deep Is Your Love?” I can only answer, “I don’t know, but I know that it is enough. It is sufficient. That means, ‘It’s enough’.”

I want to make three points from my observation of John 3:16. 1. WOW, 2. WOW! 3. WOW!

          1.   WOW! “WOW” because it amazes me that His love for me runs deeper than I can know. “Dear God, thank you for loving me that way.  Because of all of the mistakes I make I need a special love and understanding and you provide it. Thank you for loving me that way.   No wonder they say that you are lovely. You love me when I am loveless; and when my actions are loveless. Thank you for loving me that way. ” WOW!

          2. WOW! “Sufficient”.  I do not know how much He loves me but I know it’s enough. It is called, “sufficient” because it is enough to do what it is suppose to do.  Like a cool glass of water on a hot day it satisfies. WOW! His grace is sufficient to satisfy the demands of a just God. WOW!

“Was it for crimes that I have done, He groaned upon the tree? Amazing pity, grace unknown and
                       love beyond degree.”

          Thank you!

3.          WOW! This loving act opened up the possibility for a new life. The Bible says that as many as received Him to them gave He power to become the sons of God even to them that believe on His name. I received Him and now I am becoming. WOW! Old things have passed away and are passing away and I am becoming. WOW!

I agree with Jimmy Stewart. “It’s A Wonderful Life”.

A Special Note to my readers

I get it. I didn’t get it but now I get it.  For the majority of Americans, me included, this day, January 20, 2017 is one of the worst days in American history. But when you are truly attached to God Almighty through the deeply loving, finished, sufficient work of Jesus Christ it is still a wonderful life. I get it. I understand why a person like the Apostle Paul could take beating after beating after beating and still be enthusiastically ready to go on to the next place and preach about new life. He had found a wonderful new life, a wonderful new love and it was marvelous and he wanted to tells others about the possibility and all they needed to do was embrace it.  It works best on horrible days.

How deep is His love? We don’t know but it is enough.  I get it.

This is what a “Teacher Preacher” is supposed to do. A lot of people go to churches to be entertained; to get an adrenaline rush; to get their praise on. While I’m not saying that any of those things aren’t useful, we still need tools in our tool box as well as directions for how to use those tools. In the past, you have joined with me in the song “If That Isn’t Love”. What you have done is amplify the meanings and intent that can be found in John 3:16. But even more so, we must stop with the commercial soda pop valentines day definition of love. I tell people all the time that I can’t prove that I love you. Only Jesus proved it. You just gave a more useful manifestation that can cause us to shut up and listen and work with.
