About 25 years ago, I got on the bus headed home from a hard days work. I had two jobs and it was 10:00pm. I put my money in the coin box and took my seat. The bus driver was black. He said I did not pay my full fare and must I pay the full fare or off. Since I knew that I had paid full fare I refused to get off. We would pass a police station on the way. When we got to the police station, this black bus driver got up to go get the police when a lady got up to pay another fare for me even though I begged her not to. I was prepared to go to jail that night. Since an additional fare was paid, the bus driver proceeded on his route. I wasn’t happy, but there was a lesson to be learned and it was two weeks coming.
Within two weeks of that incident, I was in Baltimore with my wife and my little babies. This time a white bus driver was involved. We needed to walk two blocks to get to our destination when it began to rain profusely. The bus came but I only had a $20.00 bill. I told the white bus driver that I did not have change and I only had to go two blocks but I would ask if anyone on the bus could change a $20.00 bill. I was prepared to put the whole twenty in if I needed. That’s the way I am, but the white bus driver refused. God bless him. He put his hand over the fare box and motioned for me to sit down and I sat down thinking about what a white bus driver did for me as opposed to a black bus driver who was willing to subject me unnecessarily to the hands of a police.
That’s the color of a person’s skin don’t mean nothing to me. I don’t treat people Based on the color of their skin, whether they have a southern drawl in their voices. Sometimes your own color is your worst nightmare and sometimes your opposite color are your best friends.
The John 15:12 says:
“Love one another as I have loved you.”
