This picture makes my point quite obvious. We focus on the what of Thanksgiving, “what we are thankful for”, that is, to the exclusion of who we are thankful to.
I can see us sitting around the table now with each one taking a turn to talk about what we are grateful for. Somebody is grateful for their life, another is grateful for their family, while yet another is grateful for getting over a bout of the flu. We are often grateful for the things with very little mention of who we are grateful to until we are asked, “Who are you grateful to for your life, your family and your health?”
The picture of the pilgrim with his hands and face focussed upward makes it obvious that the one that he is grateful to is God. What about you? As you head down next week’s corridor toward Thanksgiving and you think about your life, and the things that you are grateful for, even as you think even about the turbulence that you came through, my question is, “WHO are you grateful to?”
I am grateful to God. Yes, I am grateful to my friends and family for putting up with me as well but without God t’wouldn’t be possible.
“Oh give thanks unto the Lord, for He is good and His mercy endureth forever.” (Psalm 136)
