Will God give you more than you can handle? The answer is an unequivocal, “Yes”.
We have all heard the cliche’ that says He will never give you more than you can handle. Sometimes we change one word and say that He will never give you more than you can bear which is different, albeit, a small difference.
But if God never gives you more than you can bear then you don’t need aspirin. Just grin and bear it. I was thinking about it this morning. Does God give us more than we can, “handle”? It is still an unequivocal, “Yes”. Root-canal surgery is more than I can handle. That is why I go to the dentist and we handle it together. When my ’57 Chevy broke down and I had to push it, it was more than I could handle. That is why some strangers helped me push it. Okay. It wasn’t my Chevy. It was my brother’s Chevy but together we pushed it.
This life which God gives us is more than we can handle which is the reason why we need to work together.
Some Bible student would object and say:
“Rev. Radford, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
I would tell them that they are right, but the reason that they need to do it through Christ is because it is more than we can handle by ourselves.
I hate to give away my sermon for this coming Sunday but I can see Sampson, a man who had a special God-given strength, standing between two columns at the end of his life. His strength was gone and he realized that he could not do it by himself so he looked to God. In essence he said, “Lord, one more time.” And when he did that, he brought the palace down. When we look to God and stand together, we can bring the palaces of opposition down.
The fact that there are many things in this life that we cannot accomplish alone highlights our need to work together. If we could handle every single thing that comes our way, we could not need God to help us and we certainly would not need each other. The railings on every staircase ought to be a reminder that every one of us needs a little help sometime. The canes we use to walk with, the handtrucks that we use to carry heavy loads are reminders that we need help because some things are more than we can handle by ourselves. God said in Genesis that it was not good for man to be alone it reminds us life was never meant to be handled by ourselves. Armies would be obsolete if we could fight all of our battles alone.
Soul singers, Peaches and Herb were correct when they sang, “It Takes Two, me and you.”.
Let be ready to stand together and help one another.
