“Old School”

“Thus saith the Lord, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the oldpaths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.” (Jer. 6:16)

People are sometimes called, “old school”, because of their taste in the arts and sciences. I never liked the term because people often relegate it to places of secondary importance.  The term is often viewed as, “out-of-date”, and not worthy of attention especially by so-called progressives.

In the first place, many who are called, “old school”, left evidence of their progressive-mindedness when they built the Howard’s and the Hampton Universities, not to mention, the Tuskeegee Institutes. If that is not progressive then I have no understanding of progression.

In the second place, old school genres still get first place attention in my book. It is what my colleagues call, “the real deal.” Archeologists spend hundreds of hours and dollars, digging in dirt looking for old bones, carefully brushing them off, handling them as if they had just discovered a piece of heaven, all because of the deep value that science places on old artifacts. They ask questions like, “How old is it? What is it made of? What was happening in it’s environment during it’s lifetime.” These questions are asked in an effort to determine if this find can be authenticated. In other words, “Is it the real deal”, because if it is, then it’s value doubles and triples. Surely, a penny that has a 1932 date on it is worth more than a penny.

In music, Nat King Cole, Billy Eckstine, Ella (I don’t even have to say her last name because we know who she is.), Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Billy Holiday, Count Basie and Cole Train are the real deal. The majority of artist that followed them are merely sequels, like, “Jaws 2”. So, call me, “old school.” I love it! it is an honor because I am trying my best to be the real deal and it is an honor to be placed in the same category with progressive minds.

  1. One of my prayers is that more people get a chance to read messages such as this one. It reminds us to stand on a solid rock. It reminds us to honor and not just style. As quiet as it’s kept, style is better than fad, but neither is based on foundational principles. That may be too conservative for some, but they had better wake up and look at the movie “The Titanic. Those people were ready to welcome some “Solid Rock”.

    1. Thanks for your reply which always positively expands my thoughts. Indeed, we need solid, authentic foundations on which to stand and not just be stylish or fad-ish as you so aptly put, but to stand on the solid principles that enabled us to raise the Church steeples, the halls of education, and yes to even open the oval offices.

  2. Fantastic TftD! I definitely agree with you on the superb artistry of the old school masters!!! (In my view some of these new school super stars can not even be called “artists,” a term that I associate with amazing creativity and thoughtful craft of music or other art form)

    1. Thanks and I definitely agree on your observation about the artists. I remember watching American Idol when a performer was performing. She had a definitively good voice and she used it well. After her performance Simon Cowell told her the truth. She had no imagination because she was doing everything that she had heard every other good singer do with nothing original. He told her that there are thousands of people out there who can do well what she just did and that is not what American Idol is looking for. The performer protested vehemently because she simply could not grasp the truth that Simon had just laid on her. She was a parrot and we are not looking for parrots. If you take the time to study the Rat-Pack, they were all good but each one of them, Frank, Dino and Sammy were distinctive originals. Bishop T.D. Jakes and I are from the same part of West Virginia, but I am not trying to be, Bishop T.D. Jakes. I am trying to be the best Perry that I can be.
