“Vs. 1 Now as to the times and the epochs, brethren, you have no need of anything to be written to you. 2 For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord [a]will come just like a thief in the night.” (1 Thess. 5:1)
Warren Wiersbe, a noted theologian and scholar wrote a series of commentaries on various NT books with the word, “be” in their titles. One was called, “Be Joyful”on the book of Philippians. Another one was called, “Be Mature” on the book of James. Another was called, “Be Rich” on the book of Ephesians and on the book of First Thessalonians he called it, “Be Ready” and that is what the book of First Thess. 5:1-11is all about, being ready. When someone is going to visit us in our homes, those of us who have some pride like to get ready for their arrival if we are not already ready. We straighten up the livingroom, freshen the air in an effort to be ready for their arrival. We like to be ready. I was going to run in the recent Rock and Roll Marathon in DC but I missed. The date caught me off guard and I had already planned something on that date so I was not ready to run on that date. How many things catch us off guard because we are not ready? We can afford to miss a doctor’s appointment sometimes, or an appointment for coffee with a friend. We can reschedule those things but we cannot afford to miss the coming of the Lord. Get ready. Do it today.
God does not tell us when He is coming and if God does not tell us something it is because we do not need to know it. So we do not need to know when he is coming. We just need to know that He is coming. And because He tells us that he is coming means that He wants us to do something about it, namely: be ready.
