Going Deeper

As I walked along the path one morning in suburbia observing the blooms that were coming in, another thought crossed my mind like the wind that passes and moves on. Was it the Holy Spirit?  After all the Holy Spirit is often described as wind and the last time I checked, the only way we know that wind exist is that we feel its movement and I felt it.  And, like Moses did while tending sheep I turned aside to investigate.

I did not have a burning bush but a word was dropped in my mind and I turned aside to investigate it.  I investigated the true meaning of superficiality to ensure that my thinking was correct and it was. Superficial means “at or on the surface.” That discovery caused me to believe even more deeply that this thought is probably from God.

I was thinking that many churches have been charged with being superficial and many of them have been found guilty of it. I, however, am going to stop charging many of them with being superficial and here’s the reason.

To be superficial does not necessarily mean that we are wrong. It just means that we are at or merely on the surface of truth and we need to dig deeper. So, I need to curtail much of my charges of superficiality because many of the churches are not merely superficial; they are just wrong. They are not even on the surface and my love for God and my love for them comes with a deep desire that they at least get on the surface and begin to dig into the deep foundational truths Scripture.

By the way, you cannot hurt the foundation by digging. It will survive our digging because our Lord promised that His Word would stand forever. So go ahead and dig. I redicated my ministry to digging deeper after the ugliness of the election of the current President and I will add that the ugliness in politics continues. Digging deeper into God’s Word as opposed to digging deeper into politics is my way of helping the Church live better in a world of ugly politics.

I believe that it is the Word that will help us stand so I encourage the Church and its members to go ahead. Get on the surface and start digging.

Remember that Apollos in the New Testament was a mighty orator but he did not have the whole truth until Paul helped him dig and when he did he discovered the whole truth.

Lastly, when Moses turned aside to investigate, it resulted in the liberation of the Nation of Isreal. So go ahead. Get on the surface and dig.
