Christmas

In every period of Christian history the observance of Christmas has been opposed by a minority group of Christians. Usually, one or more of three factors have been involved in the opposition: 1) a rejection of eccleciastical authority in its attempt to establish official feast days of which Christmas is one, 2) an objection to the partying, drinking, and immorality associated in every age with Christmas festivities, 3) the long-standing association of Christmas with pagan religious practices. Some protestants especially in the Calvinistic tradition including John Calvin himself, Knox the English American Puritan along with many Presbyterians refused to celebrate Christmas. However, the Lutherans, the continental reformers and other Protestants defended the observance of Christmas emphasizing the deeper truths of the incarnation. By the mid-twenthieth century Christmas had come to be observed universally in one form or another.

PS: Since we are an out-of-the-box-non-traditional Missionary Baptist Church we will have a Christmas service online this year and we are comfortable with it. It gives us an opportunity to reach across the globe and provide Season’s Greetings to each other.
